Bergdahl Associates provide the following details to assist you in understanding the coverage and application of sealants and adhesives.
Information on sealant coverage
The formula for Sealant Coverage
The following formulas can determine theoretical usage, coverage, and cost. However, the actual value must consider the realities of size irregularities and material waste in each application.
Definition of terms
1. Gal = number of gallons of coating used or required.
2. Area = total application area in sq. ft.
3. DFT = dry average Thickness in mils (1/1000 in.) of area coated.
4. % Solids = volume solids (see information on Technical Data Sheet).
Formulas: Gal = (DFT) (sq. Ft.) (% solids) (16) Area = (Gal) (% solids) (16) (DFT) DFT = (Gal) (% solids) (16) (sq. Ft.)
Adhesion Promoter
To use or not to use, that is the question.
Rule #1 Always apply an Adhesion Promoter if you apply a sealant over a sealant of different chemistry.
Rule #2 Apply an Adhesion Promoter when in doubt.
