A fire retardant is a substance used to slow down or stop the spread of fire or reduce its intensity. It is commonly accomplished by chemical reactions that reduce fuel flammability or delay combustion. In addition, fire retardants may cool the fuel through physical action or endothermic chemical reactions. Fire retardants are available as a powder mixed with water, fire-fighting foams, and fire-retardant gels. Fire retardants are also available as coatings or sprays to be applied to an object.

PROBLEM: Cleaning fire retardant off fire truck hoses

A hose reel on a fire truck was used for urban interface structure protection in Wyoming. Fire Retardant rinses off waxed, painted surfaces easily with just water but NOT off rough surfaces such as hoses.

• Hose was sprayed with eOx® Industrial cleaner
• Brushed with a soft brush
• Rinsed with water

Whatever system is used for cleaning with eOx Industrial, a mechanical action (brush, sponge, aeration of solution, ultrasonic, etc.) is required to break the surface tension of the dirt. Therefore, soaking for an extended time will not be sufficient for cleaning.

eOx Industrial is not flammable and can be safely heated. However, we recommend 50° C/122° F for immersion or ultrasonic baths to minimize the evaporation rate.
